Russell Brand’s wiry hair may be the first thing you think of when you hear ‘We Will Rock You’ but its roots far surpass Brand’s – literally and figuratively.

This year it celebrates the 10th anniversary of the musical of the same name with a world Arena Tour. Performed on stages the world over in leather pants, studs and headbands, the smash-hit rock musical is a nod to Queen, arguably the greatest rock band the world has ever known.

It was Robert De Nero’s production company Tribeca that made the first move to capture the mega rock band in a musical in the mid nineties. But ideas about a theatrical take on the life and story of Freddie Mercury, proposed by the band’s manager and other creative writers, proved too difficult to work with and the project was sidelined.

It was revived again by author Ben Elton, who took the story down another path. Elton’s approach was to make the musical about the spirit of Queen’s music and how to celebrate that in story. He was helped creatively by Queen’s surviving band members, largely Brian May and Roger Taylor.

The story was completed in 2001 and the show opened in 2002 at London’s Dominion Theatre. It proved a lasting success, celebrating its tenth anniversary there in May 2012. This achievement is all the more significant considering The Dominion is one of the West End’s largest theatres, with a capacity to seat over 2,000.

It is coming to Dublin’s O2 this April, where the audience can expect to see a sci-fi inspired, comedic story revolving around 24 of Queens greatest tracks, in the same spectacular and dramatic style for which the group is famed. It is a David and Goliath fantasy story revolving around young, idealistic individuals and powerful corporations.

Set to new stage design to accommodate a set fit for an arena, it is expected to be a visual and sensory extravaganza.
